Alumni Spotlight: Meet Dixie Bird and Jennifer Cheecham

May 6, 2026

At dzԹ, our alumni carry the lessons, values, and connections from their time on campus into every aspect of life. Each graduate’s journey is a testament to resilience, culture, and purpose, showing how Indigenous knowledge and community continue to shape meaningful contributions far beyond the classroom.

Through our Alumni Spotlight series, we highlight dzԹ graduates who are leading with heart, inspiring change, and uplifting communities. Each story reflects the spirit of We are Indigenous — celebrating identity, heritage, and the impact of Indigenous-led learning.

Dixie Bird

Program: Indigenous Studies
Community: Montreal Lake Cree Nation
Graduation Year: 2025

Words of advice: You will achieve more than you ever imagined in life.

One word to describe dzԹ: Satisfied!

Dixie Bird chose dzԹ because it was close to home and reflected her pride in attending a First Nations institution. At dzԹ, she gained a new perspective on life and developed a deeper understanding of spirituality through cultural teachings and ceremony within an academic environment.

She highlights the importance of being “teachable” and carrying knowledge forward in a practical and meaningful way. Since graduating, Dixie has advanced to a supervisor role in her career, volunteers as a hockey assistant coach, and is leading a youth gathering in Fort Qu’Appelle called Sacred Beginnings.

Jennifer Cheecham

Program: Indigenous Social Work
Community: Clearwater River Dene Nation
Graduation Year: 2026

Words of advice: If you’re looking for a quality educational experience, attend dzԹ!

One word to describe dzԹ: Empowerment.

Jennifer Cheecham chose dzԹ to strengthen her connection to her culture. While attending the Northern Campus, she was drawn to the welcoming classroom environment and the sense of family she felt among students and staff.

She values dzԹ’s approach to education, which honours Indigenous history and integrates cultural teachings into learning. One of her most memorable experiences was Culture Camp, which deepened her sense of connection and belonging.

As a 60s Scoop survivor and recovering addict, Jennifer shares that her time at dzԹ helped her build confidence to speak about her healing journey and discover a passion for helping others on their own paths.
